Coaches:
Girls Varsity: Mr. Barnette
Girls JV: Mrs. Saalborn
Boys Varsity
: Mr. Diseth
Boys JV: Mr. Stueckle

First Practice: Monday, April 4th, 2011

Practices: Our team will practice Monday through Friday from 2:15 to 4:00pm. The activity bus is available Mon. - Thurs. at 4:10pm. Athletes must arrange for a ride home after Friday practices. Please see the attached schedule.

Track Meets: All track meets begin at 3pm with field events. Running events begin at 3:20pm. Meets usually last approximately 2.5 hours. All participants must ride the bus to and from track meets, unless their coach receives a note signed by a parent/guardian prior to the start of the meet. All track athletes must bring an athletic bag to each meet to store sweats and equipment during their events. Please see the attached schedule.

Order of Events:

Field events begin at 3pm and usually last for 1 hour. There are up to four entries from each squad, varsity and JV. Both girls and boys compete at the same time, but not against each other.

  • Shot Put
  • Long Jump
  • Triple Jump (varsity only)
  • High Jump
Running events begin at 3:20pm. Each heat takes approximately 10 minutes, with one heat per squad. In the 800m and 1600m there are only 2 heats, one boys and one girls. The relays are run in two heats. Each school can have two relay teams from each squad. (times are approximate)
  • 75m hurdles ~ 3:20pm
  • 100m
  • 400m ~ 4:20pm
  • 1600m
  • 400m relay
  • 110m low hurdles
  • 800m relay
  • 800m
  • 200m ~ 5pm
  • 1600m relay

In the running events through the 400m and the field events, only four participants are allowed per squad. Therefore, we will have weekly run-offs and jump-offs to find qualifiers for each event. The 800m and 1600m have no limit on the number of participants.

Although track is made up of a collection of individual events, we are a team. We will discuss, display, and provide opportunities for all team members to learn many of the important qualities and characteristics that are required to make a team successful. These are: team spirit, motivation, enthusiasm, cooperation, loyalty, determination, honesty, reliability, and sincerity. The key is to get each athlete to provide the desire to work towards a common goal. Remember: you will get out of track what you put into it. Our goal is for each athlete to consistently perform at his/her personal best, both physically and mentally. Therefore, when we compete, we are striving towards closing the gap between our Potential and our Performance. If everyone on the team consistently performs to their potential, then we have won, no matter what the scoreboard says at the end of the meet. This philosophy can be applied to everything you do, including grades, chores, etc.

Team Rules:
With this in mind, below are our Team Rules that will help us practice some of the characteristics and qualities listed above.

General

  • All athletes are required to follow the rules and policies listed in the Student Athletic Handbook.
  • Grades are important. You must pass all your classes. Talk with your coach if this is a problem.
  • Remember: At all times, you represent the SJH Storm Track Team in the classroom, on the bus, and on the field/track. You will need to be both courteous and polite to anyone you come in contact with, including your teachers and judges/timers. Act appropriately and refrain from any behavior which might violate good manners, annoy others, or bring discredit to yourself, the team, or the school.
  • You must be on time for all meetings, practices, and classes. If you will be absent or late, let one of the coaches know in advance. Bring a note signed by an adult if you are going to be late. Tardiness and unexcused absences are unacceptable, and will result in reduced participation and/or removal from meet competition.
  • Support your teammates, both in the classroom and on the field/track, in a positive way.
  • The managers are not your personal maids. Assist them by leaving the locker room, track, and other facilities used by the team in even better condition then before we used it.
  • Keep the coaches informed about injuries and we'll help you manage them
  • Athletes are responsible for the care and maintenance of any school equipment checked out to them or used by them during practice and meets..
  • Work hard during practice, and support the team whether you are competing or not. Coaches make all decisions regarding who competes when and where. Be prepared when called upon.
  • All athletes must purchase an ASB card and pay the PSD Athletic Travel Fee to be eligible.

Practice

  • Attendance in school for at least 4 periods, and participation in Fitness Education class is required to be eligible to attend practice.
  • Be in the gym, ready for warm-ups, at 2:15pm. The locker rooms will be locked at 2:20.
  • Get good shoes to protect your feet.
  • No spikes at practice for the first two days and at no time are spikes to be worn in the building.
  • Dress appropriately, especially for cold, rainy weather.
  • You will learn and try all events.

Meets

  • At our meets, the school will be judged by your conduct from the minute you leave SJH to the minute you return. Act accordingly.
  • All athletes will ride to and from our meets on the team bus, unless the coach receives a note signed by a parent/guardian, prior to the start of the meet.
  • Under the team-issued uniform, only black spandex shorts and/or a gray tee shirt may be worn.
  • All athletes are required to have an athletic gym bag to compete in meets. This will be used to store your sweats and other belongings while you are competing.
  • Attendance at school and participation in Fitness Education classes the day of a meet are required to be eligible to participate. Attendance the day before, the day of and the day after a meet is also required.
  • Even field event competitors will be required to do a running event.

Following these team rules will result in a rewarding and successful season for everyone involved. Realizing that everyone makes mistakes, the first offense will result in a discussion with the coaches. The second offense will be suspension for one meet. If there is a third offense, then dismissal from the team is the last option. The coaches have the final say as to who competes in which events. All decisions will be based upon the best interest of everyone involved.

Parents and/or Guardians:

We are looking forward to the challenges ahead with anticipation and enthusiasm. Thank you for this opportunity to coach your son/daughter. We also ask that you read over the parent expectations on the next page. If you have any questions about the information in this packet, feel free to call us 840-8881, or email: barnetra@puyallup.k12.wa.us, or disethjd@puyallup.k12.wa.us . Storm Supporters, please help us display Storm Pride in our school and team by:

  • Making only positive comments, cheers and/or signs,
  • Treat the competition as an a athletic competition, not a war,
  • Show concern and respect for all injured players,
  • In both victory and defeat, do it with class,
  • Always display sportsmanlike conduct,
  • Respect all decisions of the officials without negativity,
  • Do not blame officials, coaches, or participants for losses,
  • If you have questions about the team or coaching decisions, contact the coach,
  • Please let the coaches coach during the meet - we need each players full attention, and
  • Remember: as adults, you should be a positive role model with appropriate behavior.

Your State of Mind

If you think you can - YOU CAN!
If you think you dare not - you don't.
If you think you can't, but really can -
It's almost a cinch you won't.

For out of this world you'll find
Success begins with a person's will,
It's all in Your State of Mind.

Many a game is lost
before ever a play is run,
and many a coward falls
before his work's begun.

Think big and your deeds will grow,
Think small and you'll fall behind.
Think you can and you will -
It's all in Your State of Mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are.
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to learn to be sure of yourself
before you can ever win a prize.

Life's victories don't always go to the
stronger, faster, or smarter man.
But sooner or later the fellow who wins
is the fellow who thinks he can.
