Frequently Asked Questions:
Will my student get a locker?
Yes. Each student at Stahl will be assigned a locker.
If my student is absent do I need to call or send a note?
Either of these notification methods work, but you must do at least one.
Students whose parents do not send a note or call will receive an
“unexcused” absence until the absence is excused by a parent or
guardian.
What if I need to take my student out of school early?
Please send a note with your student in the morning if they need to be
released from school early. This allows us to notify teachers and to
have your student down in the office and ready to go when you come in
and sign them out. If you forget to send a note, please call us as soon
as you are aware of the appointment so we can send a pass to the
student’s class. Remember that if you just show up, your student could
be in an assembly, PE class or lab class and we may have to find them
and allow them time to get dressed or clean up. Advanced notification
will save you time and help us better serve you. Students who need to
leave school for an extended period of time (vacations, surgery, etc)
need to fill out a planned absence form, take it around to all their
teachers and turn it in to the office prior to leaving. All non-medical
absence from school should be done as a planned absence. This allows the
student and teacher time to make homework arrangements.
If my student is out sick, can I get homework?
All requests for homework are processed through the office. Teachers
cannot take homework requests by e-mail or phone message. Puyallup
School District policy is that we will provide homework after your
student has been out for three days. On the third day of absence, please
notify the office that you would like to pick up homework. We will make
requests of all your student’s teachers and you may pick the homework up
after 2:00 and before the office closes at 4:00.
Can my student bring a cell phone or CD player to school?
We discourage bringing anything of value to school. Theft of electronic
equipment is always an issue at school. If your student must have a cell
phone or music player at school, then it must be turned off prior to
passing through the “Threshold of Learning.” This means that phones and
players are turned off prior to entering the doors of the school and are
left off until the student exits the doors of the school at the end of
the day. Any student caught with a cell phone or CD player out during
school hours will have it confiscated.
What if my student needs extra help with his/her class work?
Students needing extra help are encouraged to attend our “After School
Assistance”. Once a week, we will have a teacher (coach) in each of the
following academic areas: Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and
Science. These teachers are available to help students who need
additional assistance. Curriculum “coaches” are here on different nights
of the week. Please check the Stahl Web site for the day, time and
location of the curriclum "Coach" you would like to see.
How can I check my student’s grades?
Report cards go out at the end of each quarter. We also send home
Mid-quarter progress reports at the mid-point of each quarter.
Additionally, you can check your student’s grades on-line:
https://homeaccess.puyallup.k12.wa.us.
Please follow these directions for
creating an account. You can check grades anytime. Students
who receive failing mid-quarter progress reports will have them mailed
home.
How can I put money on my student’s lunch account?
Each student can put money on their lunch account at any of the cashier
stations in the commons. Additionally, you have the option of putting
money on your student’s account on-line at
www.myschoolbucks.com. This site allows you to view your student’s
purchases as well as add money to their account with a debit or credit
card.
What do I need to do so my child can participate in sports?
Every student who wants to participate in sports, must pick up a
Puyallup School District Sports packet. This packet includes a
physical form that must be signed by a doctor and several other forms
that we need to have signed by both a parent and the student. These
forms must be turned in directly to the building Athletic Director-
either on our “All School Prep Day” or during lunches prior to the first
day of each sports season. The office cannot take these packets.
Students are required to have insurance in order to participate in
school sports. Families without health insurance can purchase reasonably
priced insurance through a company contracted with the Washington
Schools Risk Management Pool. Both health and accident insurance are
available. The forms for this insurance are available in the school
office.
What Is Prep Day?
Prep day is when we take care of the “Business” of school so we don’t take
time out of classes. The Prep Day for the 2011-12 school year is
August 24th. Students turn in their new enrollment
cards, get their schedules, have school pictures taken, pick up ID
cards, purchase their ASB Card and yearbook, pay for PE Clothes, put
money on their lunch accounts, get a tour of the school, find their
classrooms, turn in Emergency Action Plans to the nurses office (for
students with serious medical concerns), and turn in physical
forms/sports packets for Fall Sports. Students who miss this day will
receive their schedules on the first day of school and will have their
pictures taken on a make-up day.
What is Stahl Storm Booster Club?
Instead of a PTA, Stahl has a Booster Club. The Booster Club is a parent
run organization that hosts one fundraiser and a membership drive each
year. The funds collected through these events enable the booster club
to help teachers with special events, equipment and field trips that
might not be possible through the building or ASB budgets. The Booster
Club offers many opportunities to volunteer like the Book Fair, Teacher
Appreciation Week and the Volleyball-a-thon. More information about the
Booster Club is available at
www.stahlboosterclub.com
.
How do I contact a Teacher if I have a concern?
Teachers can take calls before school, after school or during their
planning period. We cannot interrupt a teacher’s class for parent phone
calls. Our teachers are in the building at 7:00 and their day ends at
2:30. You can always e-mail our teachers. Their e-mail addresses are
available on our website
http://schools.puyallup.k12.wa.us/junior/stahl/index.htm.
Once again, all homework requests for students who have been absent must
come through the office.
What do I do if my student has a serious medical condition or
needs medication at school?
Any student with a serious medical condition must have an
Emergency Action Plan on file with the school nurse. It is very
important that a parent connect with our nurse on our “All School Prep
Day” or prior to the first day of school. Students needing ANY
medication (even “over the counter” meds) at school must have a
Physician’s Orders for Medication at School form signed by
their doctor and their parent. We cannot give any medication without
this completed form. The signed form must be brought in with the
medication in its original container.

Nurse's website.
Does my student need a PE Uniform?
Yes! Stahl does have a PE uniform. The Shirt is gray with the Stahl
Fitness Logo and the Shorts are navy mesh with the Stahl Fitness Logo.
Students can purchase a PE uniform on our Prep Day for $15.00 or they
can provide their own plain gray t-shirt and navy blue shorts. Sports
logos and other writings are not allowed on PE uniforms. Every 7th
grade student will have a PE class either first or second semester.
What is an ASB Card?
An ASB (Associated Student Body) Card is a card that students
purchase that supports all extra-curricular activities. Any student who
wants to participate in a sport, club, play or music group must purchase
an ASB card or pay a user fee. The user fee is $11.00 per
sport/activity, and the cost for the ASB card is $20.00. The ASB card is
a much better choice for anyone interested in getting the most
activities and value out of their junior high experience. The cards get
students into dances, plays, and concerts at a discounted admission. The
card also allows students discounted admission to other district events
and activities.
