2011-2012 Athletes and Parents,

There is a new and updated handbook - lavender in color - for the 2011-12 school year. Make sure you use this handbook.  We have them in the office right now, ready for students to pick up.  Physicals "may" be good for up to two years, BUT the remaining portion of the handbook needs to be updated every year. Our office TA's have stapled in the updated "Clearance Card" for 2011-12 school year, so athletes and parents can have it filled out ahead time.

Reminder: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) requires that all athletes have some form of medical or accidental insurance. Student/athlete insurance information packets are available in the main office.

Thank you for your time,
Stahl Athletics and Administration

Summer Athletic Planning Meeting
Monday, April 16, 2012

A parent meeting to discuss summer athletic planning will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at each of the district’s three comprehensive high schools.  The meetings, which are for parents only, begin at 6:30 PM in the Emerald Ridge, Puyallup, and Rogers high school gymnasiums. The event is designed to provide parents an early opportunity to receive communication from coaches about summer athletic plans, team camps, and training calendars. In this way, parents will have the information early in spring to help them as they plan summer vacations and family activities. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) restricts schools from encouraging student athletes (out of season) to participate in a given sport, or from distributing information to athletes pertaining to a specific event or activity. Coaches are permitted to have one meeting with squad members prior to the opening day of practice to issue equipment and distribute information. The coaches plan to meet with student athletes at a later date; therefore, the April 16 meeting is for parents only.

The Puyallup School District views athletics as a privilege that involves teamwork and self discipline.  We emphasize the fact that through interscholastic competition students are successful when they are doing well in their classes, showing good sportsmanship and striving to be team players. Because athletics is an excellent means of contributing to one's personal growth, development and education; athletics at Stahl are considered co-curricular activities. They are a privilege, not a right.  Athletes are expected to be students first, athletes second.

Ninth grade students play on the 'varsity' team and 8th grade students play on the 'junior varsity' team. Seventh grade students play in the seventh grade program where there are no 'cuts', and no score is recorded.  Only in cross country, wrestling, and track do seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to participate at other levels.  9th grade students also have the opportunity to participate on a high school athletic team, providing the sport is not offered at the junior high level.  Students must provide their own transportation.  Please contact us for more information.

To Participate in a sport:

Athletes interested in turning out for a sport must have the appropriate paperwork on file with the Stahl Junior High Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Halverson.  This paperwork must be turned into the coach before tryouts begin.  Requirements:

  • Valid physical signed and dated by a medical physician. Physicals have the potential to be good for two years from the date of the examination.

  • Insurance and Puyallup School District athletic code information completed and signed. These must be updated yearly.

  • Athletic Eligibility form completed and signed.

  • Athletes must have passed a minimum of 5 classes and have a 2.0 GPA in their last semester, and maintain these requirements throughout the season.

  • A completed Concussion Information Sheet must be on file with the Athletic Coordinator.

  • Athletes who are selected to be part of the team are also required to pay a transportation fee of $30 per sport, and have an ASB card.  There are funds available for those families who qualify for financial assistance.  Please contact the office for more information.

  • Please note: Coaches for each sport will also have additional guidelines and expectations.  Please contact the coach for further information.
