“We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.”
-Jesse Owens (1913-1980), Olympic athlete

The end of January marks a critical time for many of our students in terms of passing classes and gaining credit. We are quickly approaching the midway-point to the school year. First semester ends on Monday, January 30. The new semester, and in many cases, new classes begin on Tuesday, February 1.

Currently, grades for the third progress reporting period are available in Home Access Center and each student was given a copy of his or her current grades in sixth period today. If you do not have an e:mail account on record, please contact the school. We are happy to set up an account for you, we have a computer available for your use in our counseling center, or we are more than happy to provide a paper copy of current grades and missing work. Please contact the main office for help, 253-41-8756.

New this year is the opportunity for students to retake any tests or assessments in which they performed poorly. We are finding that not every student is taking advantage of this opportunity. Expectations vary by teacher, but if your student has a low or failing score on any test or assessment, please have them make arrangements with their teacher to reassess. In many cases, teachers have prepared study guides to help students better prepare for tests and exams.

Math tutoring is available every Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:30 am in room 107 for eighth and ninth grade students. Homework help and support for all classes is available every Thursday afternoon, in the LRC, from 2:30-4:45 through Cougar Club. In addition, individual teachers are frequently available for support most mornings and afternoons. Please contact your child’s teacher to make arrangements for additional help.

With just under four weeks to go, please encourage your student to take full advantage of the supports and opportunities available. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact us immediately.

Sincerely,
Ailene M. Baxter, Principal

While it may be only November, it is time to begin thinking of which school your student will attend next school year. The waiver process begins now in order for the district to determine staffing and classroom needs at each school prior to the end of the current school year.
The optimal timeline for receiving waiver applications is coming soon: January 5-10. Waiver applications not received until after this window will not be considered until April 1-5 or June 1-5.
Out-of-district applications: Please visit your residential district to request a “Release of Attendance”. Complete a “Non-Resident Application for Enrollment” form. Submit both to the Director of Student Services at 302 2nd St SE, Puyallup, 98372.
In-district applications: If your student is currently on a waiver, and you wish for him/her to attend this same school next year, you do not need to do anything. According to new policy guidelines, the student will continue automatically at the same school unless rescinded by the parent or revoked by the school. Parents who wish to request a new school for their student will need to complete an “Intra-District Transfer of Schools” form. Submit this form to the Director of Student Services at 302 2nd St SE, Puyallup, 98372.
9th graders: Parents who wish to request a different high school than their residential high school need to submit an “Intra-District Transfer of Schools” form by the secondary timeline of January 5-10 in order to register for the desired school and classes in late February.
Magnet Programs: Several programs, especially Culinary Arts and Automotive at PHS, are highly popular and more students apply each year than there are spaces. Waiver applications must be received no later than January 10 in order to be considered for the lottery for space within these programs.

Hey Cougs – it’s time to check your self! Are you showing POWER in all your words and actions? Are you “what’s right at Ferrucci”? If so, it’s time to be recognized! Staff throughout the building are looking for Cougs that are demonstrating POWER in all that they do and are “what’s right at Ferrucci”! If they catch you, they will fill out a “what’s right at Ferrucci” POWER gram and give it to you. Your job then is to bring it down to the office and deposit it the POWER receptacle. Then listen to morning announcements to see if your “what’s right at Ferrucci” POWER gram gets read over the intercom. Good luck Cougs! Keep showing POWER and being “what’s right at Ferrucci!”
