Walker Campus Overview and ProgramOverview
Located in the downtown area referred to as North Puyallup, Walker High School first began to address unique student needs through alternative education 28 years ago in the gym of North Puyallup Elementary School. In 1986 a new facility was built on the same 3.8 acres of land. The open design of the small building reflects the familial atmosphere encountered at Walker by both students and staff. While Walker has a different look from the comprehensive high schools in the Puyallup District, its facility supports an equally high standard of teaching excellence.
Curricular Program
Walker High School is the Academic Alternative in the Puyallup School District. Walker offers a basic core curriculum for grades 10 - 12. Students at Walker are held accountable for the same graduation requirements as all students in the Puyallup School District. Students must pass a set of required courses; build a plan to prepare for their post-high school careers; meet learning standards in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics on the HSPE, or one of several alternatives; and complete a project of their choice that requires them to apply their skills on a topic of interest to them.
The individual needs of students sometimes calls for additional adjustments and further differentiation of instruction within each class. Teachers at Walker go above and beyond to know each of their students as well as possible, taking note of circumstances in their lives beyond the school setting, in order to best accommodate their individual needs. The goal is that each student feels an integral part of the school and receives the help and attention necessary for his or her individual success. Every student at Walker will know that she or he is, indeed, "Worth It!"
