High School Proficiency Exam

OSPI page with changes from WASL to new HSPE for 2009-10.

Beginning in the 2009-10 school year, the high school Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) is being replaced by the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE).

The HSPE name conveys the goal of the test: to measure a student’s proficiency of basic skills. Students in the classes of 2010-2012 must pass a reading and writing assessment to be eligible to graduate, however; students who do not pass the math HSPE are required to pass two math credits after their 10th grade year in order to earn a diploma. If a student has already passed a specific assessment via the WASL (i.e., reading), they will not have to take the HSPE in that content area.

Students in the Class of 2010 and beyond are be required to pass reading and writing. Currently, OSPI is debating which graduating class will be required to pass the math and science assessments.

The HSPE is shorter to take than the WASL and will be moved online over the next few years. Beginning this spring (2010) reading, math and science will take just one day each instead of two with the previous WASL. For now, writing will still take two days.

The HSPE takes place in the Spring and Summer. Students who miss a day during the March/April exam must retake the test for the content area they missed. The next retake opportunity will is in August.

For questions regarding your child or general ERHS testing information please contact Lisa Kusche, ERHS On Time Graduation Specialist, at Lisa Kusche or 253.435-6315
