From the Principal

Happy New Year to our Zeiger families!

As we enter 2012, we cannot help but reflect on all we have accomplished during our first trimester of 2011. Our teachers and students have been very hard at work. Your children are continuing to learn and are working harder than ever before in their classrooms. We began our school year looking at our school’s data. We recognized and celebrated our students’ strengths and continued the necessary work in converting their challenges into successes. We know that with your continued support students will continue to achieve at higher levels.

Now would be a great time for you to sit down with your child at home to set some goals or recommit to the ones that were set at conference time. Listed below are guidelines to follow when setting goals. I hope you will find it helpful for both you and your child as we continue to work on improving student achievement.

~ GOAL SETTING STEPS ~
Step 1 – Determine an area of improvement and set one goal (Ex: homework quality, study time, more reading at home.)
Step 2 – Create a plan to accomplish the goal each day (Ex: I will do my homework in a quiet place. I will ask my parents to check my homework when finished.)
Step 3 – Develop a strong belief that you can achieve your goal.
Step 4 – Set a deadline for your goal.
Step 5 – Write a goal down. By doing this, your goal is no longer just a thought. It becomes real to you.
Step 6 – Check the success of your plan (Ex: Are there any changes needed to the plan for me to be successful?)

Zeiger: A "School of Distinction"

Four schools win statewide recognition for academic improvement
Kalles Junior High and Zeiger, Woodland, and Sunrise elementary schools have each been recognized as a “School of Distinction” for being among the top 5 percent of schools statewide that demonstrated sustained academic achievement in reading and math.

This is the second consecutive year that Kalles Junior High and Zeiger Elementary have received the statewide recognition.

The four Puyallup schools are among 94 statewide that will be honored during a regional awards ceremony planned in December. A banner will be presented to each school proclaiming it as a “2010 School of Distinction Award Winner.”

Each school had to have scored at or above the state average in math and reading in grades four, seven, or 10 on the 2010 Measurement of Student Progress or High School Proficiency Exam. Schools that met that requirement were then evaluated for academic gains in both subjects over the past five years.

The award is co-sponsored by The Center for Educational Effectiveness and the Washington chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International.

The following schools received this award in past years:

2009
Kalles Junior High
Fruitland Elementary
Hunt Elementary
Zeiger Elementary
