Student Safety
Elementary Student Right's and Responsibilities (2011-12)

At Brouillet We Respect:

  • All People

  • Property

  • Language

  • Personal Space

Everyone will be treated with dignity and respect.

This is a successful process when parents and school staff work together on a plan to help children learn responsible choices. Teachers will establish classroom rules with student input. Students will be taught basic playground, hallway, restrooms, assembly, before and after school procedures by staff members throughout the year.

While the majority of students in our school will strive to meet our expectations for responsibility and self-discipline, there will be those not meeting expectations. Severe misbehavior in four (4) categories may be referred to the office. These are physically dangerous behaviors, illegal acts, insubordinate behavior and chronic misbehavior. Parents can expect to receive a call or written referral from the principal when students reach this level.

Discipline at Brouillet is progressive. At the first offense, there is a reminder or minor consequence. Exceptions are dangerous, illegal, and insubordinate behaviors. Students will be taught expectations/rules and an opportunity to practice the appropriate behavior when misbehavior occurs. Each student is supplied with an Elementary Rules and Regulations Packet at the beginning of each year. Please read and discuss this handout with your student.

Student Safety

Periodically, we will hold emergency drills for earthquakes, fire, and lockdowns. These drills will be taught and practiced to students so that they are routine should an emergency take place.

During a fire drill...students, staff, and guests will exit the building and line up according to procedures. A bell will signal re-entry into the building.

To practice for an earthquake...students, staff, and guests, will drop, cover (the head and neck with their arm under a desk or table) and hold (onto their desk or table leg). In the gym or hall, they will drop, cover, and hold. An announcement will take place if evacuation is necessary. There may be times when it is safer to remain in the building after an earthquake.

There are two types of lockdowns...partial and full. A full lockdown is announced and the building is "locked" up. No parents or guests will be allowed in until law enforcement gives us the all clear. During a partial lockdown, students are allowed to sit and work at their desks, but the class doors are locked and no entry allowed. A partial lockdown would be used if there were smoke in the air, but not an immediate danger to students.

Each classroom has a red emergency backpack. Additional emergency supplies and water are stored in a storage shed as well as other designated places around the building.

You can help with safety also. Please make sure your student:

  • knows his/her name, address, phone number, and general location of home.

  • knows emergency contacts to be reached when parents aren't available.

  • knows rules of the road for safety when walking from home to school or the bus stop.

  • brings a note to school if dismissal plans change.

  • knows when you aren't going to be home and where to reach you.

  • know where to go if school dismisses early (power failure, storm, etc.).

  • knows how to deal with strangers.

Visitors and guests must check in at the main office before going to a classroom. An official visitor/volunteer badge should be visible at all times. It is the shared responsibility of parents and staff to question any adult seen in the building without a badge.

Remember... Update your emergency card if phone numbers and information change. Moving? Please let the office know as soon as possible.

Volunteers and Guests in the Building

We welcome volunteers and guests; however, for everyone's safety we require certain procedures.

  • Each volunteer must complete a volunteer application that includes a Washington State Patrol background check. This is true for any activity even field trips.

  • After approved, each regular volunteer will have his or her picture taken in the office and a volunteer name badge will be made. These are volunteers who are in the building on a regular basis. There are other badges for guests.

  • Badges must be returned to the main office when the volunteer leaves for the day.

  • There is a sign in book for guests and volunteers. Regular volunteers will have a designated page for sign-in.

We hope you understand and appreciate the need for security and safety when it comes to our children. We appreciate the many volunteers at Brouillet who make it a great place for children and adults too!

Safe Walking Routes

We suggest your child walk with a partner to and from school. Adults and older students without school business are not allowed on school grounds during school hours. Setting a departure time from home to allow your child to arrive between 8:15-8:20 AM is important.

Safety Patrol

The safety patrol is made up of fifth and sixth grade students under the supervision of a staff member. Their responsibility is to patrol the crosswalks both in the morning and afternoon arrival and dismissal times. Your cooperation with directions given by these students is appreciated for the safety of all students. Observe the important job of our School Safety Patrol students at the entrance. Please Drive slowly.

Parking Lot Safety…Student Pick-Up and Drop-Off

Parents are reminded there is no parking and waiting in your vehicles along the front of the school or along the fence by the ball fields.  Please remember...

  • In the morning, park your vehicle and walk your child to the front door. Remember, you may not go to the classroom without first signing in and getting a badge...so it is best to give your child a hug at the front door and let them enter on their own. This builds important self-managing skills also.

  • In the afternoon, park your vehicle and wait for your child.  Students in rooms 12-22 exit through the front doors by the kindergarten classrooms.  Portables and rooms 3-11 exit through the front gates near the playfield.  Room 23 & 24 exit through the main front doors.

  • Parents must keep younger siblings close to them and under control.

  • Parents may drop students off in the morning in the designated drop off zone by the main entrance. Your cooperation is necessary and appreciated to keep the "flow" through the parking lot both manageable and less stressful.

  • Students should not be dropped off before 8:10 in the morning. There is no supervision prior to that time. Please also try to limit picking up your child early. This is very disruptive to the classroom and teaching day.

  • At no time should students walk into the parking lot without an adult. Adults must walk their students across the crosswalk.

  • Choosing to transport your child is an option that carries responsibility and at times, inconveniences. Please be patient and supportive of the process.

Bus Riding

The Puyallup School District provides transportation for children living in areas of considerable distance from school or areas of marginal walking safety. Students are asked to ride the bus consistently. Bus students are to get off at their regular stops only, unless written permission is presented to the school office prior to the change.

Bus Rules

  • Stay seated, facing forward at all times

  • Keep hands and feet to yourself

  • Use a quiet voice

  • Use appropriate language

  • Remember, the bus driver is in charge

Bicycles

Only students in grades 4, 5, and 6 may ride bicycles to school. Bicycle helmets are required for all riders. Students are expected to walk bicycles on the school sidewalks and campus. It is the parents' responsibility to decide whether or not their child has the judgment to ride safely. The school assumes no responsibility for bicycles that are brought to school. Students must lock their bikes on the rack provided. Skateboards, in-line skates and skates must be carried onto school property and stored in backpacks if possible.
